Aioffe, along with Joshua, is one of the main characters navigating life as a couple and as a fae living in human society, in the main Naturae series. Start her journey in Destiny Awaiting when she runs away from home and meets Joshua. Personalities, cultures and opinions clash as they travel to war with Henry V. In Anarchic Destiny, she and Joshua face threats from all sides – to the realm and to their personal future. Having been made fae, Joshua is unique amongst creature-kind, which puts him in a tenuous position. Influenced by his human past as Tarl, he struggles to reconcile who he was with who he is meant to be. A master blacksmith turned silversmith, Joshua is at heart a homebody, happiest when he is surrounded by friends and family. His kind heart, bow and arrow, and ability to come up with a plan under pressure makes him a hero in many people’s eyes, but to Aioffe especially. He’s also an expert forger, an awful thief, and

Joshua, along with Aioffe, is one of the main characters navigating life as a couple and as fae living in human society, in the main Naturae series. Start his journey in Destiny Awaiting when a strange fae girl runs away from home and into Tarl. Personalities, cultures and opinions clash as they travel to war with Henry V. Their relationship is tested again when Aioffe is kidnapped, leaving him near death. Joshua sets out on a desperate quest to find her, and himself, in Disrupting Destiny. In Anarchic Destiny, Aioffe and Joshua face threats from all sides – to the realm and to their personal future. When a killer of Queens has his wife in the firing line in Destiny Arising, Joshua turns sleuth and hunter, but wrestles with his own demons which threaten to cripple their attempts to capture the murderer.

Nemis

You’ll love Nemis if you like:

  • Portrayals of ordinary women challenging adverse attitudes at every part of their life – from settling down to menopause and beyond.
  • Tudor times, especially if you’ve an interest in medical lore and the demonization of women!
  • Against the odds love
  • Prophesies and quests

Genre Matches:

  1. Fantasy / Science Fiction
  2. Thriller / Horror
  3. Romance
  4. Historical

Nemis has been traumatised by prophetic, debilitating visions all her life, but it doesn’t stop her going on an adventure! Her condition, often mistaken to epilepsy, has it’s challenges, namely deciphering what the ‘sights’ actually mean, but her bravery and caring nature means she isn’t short of friends to help. Over the course of the Naturae series, she grows from young woman, to mature matriarch, discovering her true destiny in later years.

She is intensely human, despite being a witch, suffering the agonies of many a Tudor female, including the loss of children, marrying your true love, menopause, ostracisation and more.

Healer, se’er, and long suffering mother, Nemis represents all women who battle daily challenges and juggle family and career with a grin on their face, even when facing certain death!

Nemis features in all of the Naturae series of books, from helping Joshua find his true love in Disrupting Destiny, forewarning of danger to come in Anarchic Destiny as well as helping Aioffe with her exhaustion. Accused of witchcraft in Destiny Arising, she faces unspeakable horrors, which threaten everything she holds dear. To survive, she must face a destiny which she didn’t foresee.

Ambassador Spenser

If you like characters who whole-heartedly embrace the changing times they live in, sometimes to their detriment, then you’ll love Spenser. Funny, heartfelt and dynamic, Ambassador Spenser is the epitome of ‘cool’ in every age he lives in.

Genre Matches:

  1. Fantasy / Science Fiction
  2. Action / Adventure
  3. Mystery / Crime
  4. Thriller / Horror
  5. Romance

One might assume Spenser is superficial with his attention to the latest Tudor  fashion, but this would be a deliberately planted misconception. Mock him as a ponce, a poppinjay, as you admire his quick thinking prowess, but these traits are all simply a cover for a highly astute political force to be reckoned with. Ambassador Spenser has for centuries represented the European fae in Naturae, from Queen Lana’s time, when his ancestors murdered her mother in a Caesar-like coup. His loyalties may appear divided, but his heart is true and he serves those he cares about with unswerving determination to do the right thing, even at huge personal cost. Spenser is in every Naturae book, from his Machiavellian plotting in Risking Destiny, to showing his true colours in Disrupting Destiny. Life is never dull when Spenser is around, and when he finally risks his heart, maintaining the balance of his public persona with his private life proves to be his biggest challenge yet.

Henry Fitzroy

You’ll love Henry if you are a fan of:

  • Morally grey characters
  • Vampires with a heart
  • LGBTQ+ storylines
  • Formidable villains

Genre Matches:

  1. Fantasy / Science Fiction
  2. Action / Adventure
  3. Thriller / Horror
  4. Romance
  5. Historical
  6. Non Fiction
  7. Biography / Memoir

The morally grey character you’ll love to love AND hate! Henry Fitzroy, bastard son of Henry VIII, was made vampire at the tender age of 17, and he never quite got over missing out on taking his father’s throne. Losing his soul when he became a vampire, then being hidden away (forgotten about) for many years, has meant that his moral compass is… wonky. He is also nothing if not determined to reclaim what was promised to him – a throne.

Well-educated (some might say entitled), he can move with ease in most settings but is prone to losing his temper when hungry. Henry starts his story in Anarchic Destiny and it continues to evolve through the rest of the Naturae Series. He finds himself caught up in significant moments in human history, witnesses rebellions, royal occasions, battles and more, which, being a newly made vampire who should live forever, offers him the chance to view their effects with a longer term perspective. He is, if you like, the embodiment of our 20th century critical eye on history’s events, along with Aioffe who has a similar perspective. Experience these events as if you were there yourself in Henry’s storyline. A lot of the detail he notices is drawn from contemporary eye witness accounts, for example, the gaoler at the Tower of London, who kept detailed diaries of all occupants, including Lady Jane Grey and Queen Elizabeth.

Real historical figures

The Naturae Series and the Fables from Naturae collection are full of interactions with real historical figures, so why not see how many you can spot? You’ll definitely find some familiar faces, such as:

  • Elizabeth I in Anarchic Destiny and Destiny Arising
  • Philip of Spain and Mary I in Anarchic Destiny
  • Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk in Anarchic Destiny
  • Mary Queen of Scots in Destiny Arising
  • Lord Darnley and the Earl of Bothwell in Destiny Arising
  • Grainne O’Malley in Myths, Mist and Madness

And many more….

Fairfax

A quirky daemon with a heart of gold, who cannot escape the chaos which seems to follow him like a bad spell. Always upbeat, willing to lend a hand to his friends, and entirely without shame about how he makes his living as a trickster, bootlegger and sometime pirate. He can often be found selling secrets in the back streets of London, or off adventuring with his lover, Henry Fitzroy. Fairfax is but a young student in Disrupting Destiny, desperately trying to escape the draconian schoolmasters at the Abbey to discover new worlds. As he grows up in the shadow of legendary spies and is quick to pick up all the tricks of the trade as the series progresses. He matures and falls in love during Anarchic Destiny and his mind turns to the future in Destiny Arising when he wants what ‘normal people’ have – security and a loving partner in life. He even gets his own story in the Myth, Mist and Madness novella!

You’ll love Fairfax if you are keen on:

  • Chaos and quips
  • LGBTQ+ storylines
  • Edge of your seat adventure

Lady Hanley

Mary Hanley is like the grandmother you sort of wish you had and sort of are scared of. Practical, demanding, she’s a wealthy figure of authority in the town of Beesworth. She’s also more than slightly grumpy, with good reason.

You’ll love Lady Hanley if you like:

  • Kind but meddling benefactors
  • Second chance careers
  • Created families
